How to wash your hair like a pro: golden tips from our stylists

Nothing feels as good as soft, bouncy hair after a salon wash. At KURO, we’re happy to share our tips and tricks for a wash that leaves your locks looking amazing and smelling just as good. How? With the right techniques, temperature and products, you can give your hair that same salon-quality shine. In this blog, we’ll walk you step by step through how to wash your hair just like we do in the salon.

1. Brush your hair before stepping into the shower

The golden rule that’s often forgotten. Brushing your hair before wetting it removes loose strands and tangles. This prevents knots during washing, helping reduce breakage and making detangling easier afterward. Got curls? Gently detangle with your fingers. Tip: use a flexible-bristle brush or wide-tooth comb to reduce friction.

2. Rinse with lukewarm (not hot) water

A hot shower might feel great, but it’s not good for your hair. Hot water dries out your scalp and opens hair cuticles too much, which can dull your hair’s shine. It’s best to rinse with lukewarm water. This is also the perfect temperature to remove dirt and product buildup.

3. Choose a shampoo that suits your hair type

Not every shampoo suits every hair type. Fine hair benefits from lightweight, volumising shampoos, while curls or thick hair need moisturising or nourishing shampoos. Unsure? Our stylists will gladly advise you. In our salon, we help you find the products that work best for your hair and scalp. Simply book your appointment online.

4. Wash twice if there’s product buildup

Styling products can be stubborn. For truly clean hair, wash twice. The first wash removes dirt, sebum and styling product residue. The second wash allows your shampoo to work effectively on clean hair. You only need a small amount of shampoo, about the size of a coin is enough. Gently massage the shampoo in with your fingertips (never your nails!) to stimulate scalp circulation.

5. Care for your scalp too

We can’t stress it enough: healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. For truly clean hair and a cared-for scalp, we recommend our Scalp Detox Treatment. This intensive cleansing allows your scalp to breathe again and gives your hair the nutrients it needs to grow strong. Want to know more about this treatment? Read about it in this blog.

6. Apply conditioner or mask to dry areas

Conditioner is not an extra — it’s essential for sealing and protecting hair cuticles after washing. Focus on the lengths and ends, as they dry out the fastest.Tip: use a nourishing mask once or twice a week if your hair is dry, coloured or damaged.

7. Finish with a cold rinse for extra shine

It might take some courage, but a cold rinse at the end works wonders. Cold water closes the cuticles, leaving hair smooth and shiny. It also strengthens hair structure and helps reduce frizz.

8. Blot your hair dry with a microfiber towel

Rubbing wet hair with a towel? Better not. This can cause breakage and frizz. Instead, gently blot your hair with a soft towel, microfiber cloth or cotton T-shirt. This absorbs moisture without damaging your hair.
