Everything about toners: what does a toner do after coloring your hair?
At KURO, it's all about healthy hair and a healthy scalp. A radiant color is beautiful, but only if your hair does not suffer from it. That is why, in our salon in Rotterdam, we use high quality products and techniques that not only deliver results but also respect the condition of your hair and scalp. The toner is a good example of that. It is a subtle coloring that refines your hair color without putting it under stress again. In fact, in many cases, a toner helps restore balance after an intensive coloring treatment.
But what exactly is a toner? In this blog, we explain everything about the importance of a good toner, why we recommend it, why it can be beneficial for your hair and scalp, and how to keep your color both beautiful and healthy after your visit to KURO Rotterdam.
What exactly is a toner?
But first things first: what is a toner? A toner is a semi permanent color treatment that corrects or enhances the undertone of your hair. It is not a classic dye that covers your roots or completely changes your hair color. A toner works much more subtly. It adds nuance, shine and refinement. It gives your hair color that extra dimension that makes it look more natural, fresher or more intense.

Why is a toner used after coloring?
During the coloring or lightening process, underlying pigments often become visible, such as yellow or orange tones. This can make your hair color turn out differently than expected. A toner helps to neutralize those warm tones or enhance a desired shade. The result is a more natural and beautiful color, completely tailored to your hair type and preferences.
When should you use a toner and when not?
A toner is not a mandatory part of every treatment, but it is often the key to a truly beautiful end result. You opt for a toner when, for example, you have had highlights done and notice a yellow glow, or if your hair color quickly becomes dull and could use a refresh. Also, if you want to achieve a specific tone such as a cool ash blonde or a warm caramel, a toner is essential.
There are also situations where a toner is less necessary. If you have dark hair that has been dyed in a rich, deep tone that has developed evenly, the toner can sometimes be skipped. But even then, at KURO, we may use a toner to add shine or a subtle nuance. It all depends on your hair color, skin undertone and styling preferences.
Toner for blonde and other hair colors
For blonde hair, a toner is almost always a must. Especially with bleached hair or highlights, a toner helps to make the color look cool, fresh or warm, depending on your preference. But toners also work beautifully with browns, coppers or rose gold shades. It deepens the brown, softens harsh transitions in balayage, or gives grey tones that characteristic silvery shine.
Coloring, toning and then coloring again: when and why?
Sometimes at KURO we advise treating the hair in multiple steps: first coloring, then toning, and later coloring again. We do this, for example, in the case of a color correction or when we want to build a new color in layers. Suppose you want to go from dark to light. In the first session, we lighten the hair and use a toner to set the right tone. In a follow up appointment, we can continue building towards the desired color without overloading your hair. This gives your hair time to recover, keeps it healthy and gives us more control over the final result. This approach is gentler on your hair and often leads to the most beautiful result in the long run.
How often should you use a toner?
On average, a toner looks good for four to eight weeks. That depends on your hair type, how often you wash it, and whether you use the right care products. Fortunately, you do not need to color your hair every time to keep your color fresh. Many of our clients in Rotterdam schedule a toner touch up between coloring treatments. That way their color stays vibrant and shiny, without stressing the hair.
Toner at KURO: always tailored to your hair
At KURO, we like to work with a personal hair plan. We look at who you are and what your hair needs. During a color treatment, we discuss which tone suits your skin best, what kind of shine you are looking for and how you care for your hair at home. We only use the premium Goldwell Colorance Glos toner and tailor the treatment entirely to your hair structure, color history and desired result.
How do you care for your hair after a toner?
To enjoy your toning for as long as possible, proper aftercare is essential. We recommend using the Kerasilk Color Protecting Duo Set. This hair care line, which also smells amazing, is specially developed for colored hair. We also advise washing your hair with lukewarm water, hydrating it well with a mask, and using a UV protective product, especially in summer.
At KURO, we are happy to help you with personal product advice after your treatment, tailored to both your hair color and scalp. That way, you keep not only your color beautiful but also your hair and scalp healthy.
